My career is centered on design: web design, video production, and photography. I started thinking about residential design when I became involved in helping my brother with a building project.
Hiring an architect was really out of the budget. I researched the internet for house plans that could be purchased online, but they were too cookie cutter. This led me to trying out various software packages for creating residential design and construction plans.
My brother wanted something contemporary. He assembled photos of houses that appealed to him and, using Chief Architect and with a basic idea in mind, I designed early prototypes. We modified the floor plan and interior and exterior designs based on my brother’s feedback and my research, and eventually arrived at the version that reflects his taste and lifestyle. The builder submitted the completed plans to City Planning for permit approval and we began construction.
The biggest takeaway during this design experience has been the number of revisions based on the seemingly endless combinations for layout, windows, roof styles, and siding, and the powerful ability of 3D versions of the exterior and interior to guide the selection process. The result is a financially feasible, fully imagined, custom designed, energy efficient home.
In my experience, whether it’s designing a home or a website, the process of working with clients to develop their ideas and values into a well-designed plan is a creative and rewarding endeavor.
